"Fembots" originated in 2018 as a longer, more structured composition built around a more elaborate guitar riff, influenced by aspects of 65daysofstatic. After performing it in that form for several months, the band simplified the guitar riff, which led to a revision of the track's overall structure into a more concise and direct form. The track's mechanical character derives from a metallic guitar tone produced through a ring modulator, combined with a distorted, obstinate and repetitive bass line. The title references a two-part episode of "The Bionic Woman," a late-1970s American science-fiction television series, chosen for its fit with the track's atmosphere. These associations developed into a narrative concept that led the band to collaborate with Jack Pressel and Maddalena Gattoni on a music video, built around deliberately open-ended imagery revolving around themes of alienation and conformism. According to the band, the track was constructed around a guitar loop repeated through most of its duration, with the guitar tone for the main riff ultimately drawn from an earlier pre-production take; the drum pattern in the track's closing section reflects an influence from heavier music listened to during one member's youth, while the bass part was built around an intentionally distorted, saturated tone with a line that varies slightly at key structural points.
